About the role:
The Global Remote Sensing & GIS Specialist (GRSS) will lead research and development (R&D) projects focused on integrating environmental considerations within our practices using remote sensing and GIS data and tools. They will play a key role in advancing MAG’s mission to enhance environmental sustainability.
This role is a global role and will provide remote sensing expertise to all countries in which MAG is working. During the first year of this project, a focus will be made on West African countries, where we aim to develop and pilot a spatial model to determine suitable locations for constructing armouries and explosive storage facilities, as well as sites for demolition in study areas.
About you:
The successful candidate will have experience in conducting remote sensing and GIS research. Proficiency in satellite imagery data sources, including both commercial and open-access datasets as well as remote sensing and GIS software (e.g., ENVI, Erdas Imagine, ArcGIS, SNAP) is essential as the role holder will work with a high degree of autonomy. Organisation and communication skills are key as the role involves working on multiple takes and priorities with differing deadlines.
About this mission:
Globally, MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury.
One of the main focuses in MAG’s programmes is Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM), working with national defence and security authorities towards the safe storage, management and destruction of weapons and munitions.
The PQT team has a broad responsibility for ensuring overall programme quality across a range of areas. It is responsible for maintaining the high standards of the organization’s work and ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of all programmes. PQT is divided into three main units: Standards, Training and Compliance Unit (STCU), Programmes Information Management Unit (PIMU), and Performance and Learning Unit (PLU).
This role is attached to the PIMU and has a global scope, providing remote sensing expertise to all countries where MAG operates. However, during the first year of this project, the focus will be on West African countries. - Salary: £42,860 per annum including all allowances and this increases with service.
- Accommodation: MAG will provide accommodation in-country.
- Leave: We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. You will have a minimum of six weeks out of the programme per year or pro rata if the contract is less than a year.
- Flights: MAG provides three international flights home per year pro rata if your contract is less than a year.
- Insurance: Programme based staff are automatically covered by MAG’s comprehensive insurance package including: Personal accident and medical expenses insurance; Death by natural causes insurance and access to 24-hour medical assistance.
MAG will support the successful applicant with any visa or work permit required, including application, administration and costs, however applicants will need to be able to obtain these within a reasonable time period to be considered for the role, due to programme needs.
